Your Neck: More Than Just Support

The upper part of your cervical spine, especially C0–C2, does much more than hold your head up. It provides direct input to the vestibular system, which helps you:

  • Keep your balance
  • Track moving objects with your eyes
  • Adjust your posture automatically
  • Feel spatially aware during motion

When this part of the neck is unstable, stiff, or weak, those functions can suffer.

Cervico-Ocular and Vestibulo-Ocular Reflexes: The Stability You Don’t Think About

Your eyes and your balance depend on finely tuned reflexes:

  • The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) keeps your eyes stable when your head moves.
  • The cervico-ocular reflex (COR) helps adjust your gaze based on feedback from your neck joints and muscles.

If your neck muscles aren’t providing clear, strong input—especially the deep stabilizers like longus colli and rectus capitis—your brain can become overloaded with conflicting signals. That leads to symptoms like:

  • Eye fatigue
  • Poor tracking or visual focus
  • Dizziness when turning your head
  • A feeling of being off-balance
  • Light sensitivity or “fogginess”

These issues often don’t show up on scans, but they’re real—and fixable.

The Post-Concussive Trap

It’s common to be told, “Your brain has healed, everything looks fine”.

But if your neck didn’t recover along with your brain, your nervous system is still operating in a stressed, unstable state. Even small limitations in cervical isometric strength or control can create a ripple effect throughout your visual and balance systems.

Case Study: Turning the Corner

A teenage soccer player came to us months after her concussion. Her MRI was clear, but she still couldn’t read for long or tolerate busy environments. She also had mild neck discomfort and a sense that her head felt “wobbly”.

We assessed her upper cervical control and found significant deficits in isometric endurance and deep neck flexor function.

After four sessions of targeted cervical isometric training, eye tracking work, and cranial therapy, her symptoms dramatically improved. Within two weeks, she was back to full reading capacity, and her dizziness resolved.
