Pelvic Floor Therapy

Our Assessment:

Your pelvic physiotherapist has been trained to assess the function of your pelvic floor both externally and internally, entering through either the vagina or anus. Not everyone is comfortable with internal work, so rest assured that our caring staff will walk you through the process and can be 98% effective even without internal work if that is what you prefer. Many pelvic floor clinics focus only on the pelvic floor or the pelvis itself. At PhysioActive, your therapist will not only address your pelvic pain, incontinence, and other concerns, but will also look at why the condition has developed and create a personalized plan for you. How you breathe and the coordination between your breathing muscle, the diaphragm, and the back play an important role in the function of your pelvic floor. The blood supply and nerves that control the automatic functions of your pelvic organs start in your thorax. A problem with your hip, knee, or foot can lead to pelvic dysfunction. Your PhysioActive team will determine the underlying cause of your pelvic floor issues.

Our Treatment:

Yes, we can treat the pelvic floor, and we will, but what makes us so effective is our global assessment outlined above. Understanding that the body is connected and that the pelvic floor is part of a system allows your therapist to design a specific care program to help you. Our multi-modal approach to therapy has been shown to be the most effective method. We use education, exercise, manual (hands-on) therapy (internal and external), as well as healing technologies to have you feeling and peeing better as soon as possible, and restoring your lifestyle. No one should think that incontinence, leaking with sneezing or laughter, or even urinary urgency is normal. In severe cases such as prolapse, we will work with your doctors to optimize recovery.

Our Technology

Healing technologies, such as light and laser therapy, are pain-relieving and blood-flow-increasing modalities that are safe for you, the pregnant mother, as well as the fetus if you are pregnant. Some electrotherapies are very safe and effective depending on your specific concerns. We may include full-body systemic treatment such as pulsed electromagnetic therapy (PEMF) or magnetic biostimulation. We also prescribe a treatment program for you online with pictures, videos, and instructions to make following your program easier and more manageable, even after things get crazy when your newborn joins your family.

Pelvic Floor Issues:

The pelvic floor is the collection of muscles, nerves, blood vessels, connective tissue, and other organs in and around the pelvis. A strong, healthy pelvic floor is crucial for both bowel and bladder continence. However, surgery, aging, and other issues can lead to pelvic floor dysfunction. These issues include the loss of complete control over the bowels and/or bladder, along with pelvic organ prolapse—the protrusion of the bladder and other organs into the vagina.

Pelvic Floor Muscle Functions:

These “superhero” muscles are shaped like a bowl at the bottom of our abdominal cavity and perform the following critical duties:

  • Support our internal organs (the bladder and rectum, the uterus in women, and the prostate in men)
  • Act as a stop-and-go light for bladder and bowel function
  • Have a major impact on our sexual function
  • Stabilize our spine as they work with deep core muscles
  • Help our circulatory system get the blood and other body fluids from the legs back toward the heart
