CranioSacral Therapy (CST)
Our Assessment:
At PhysioActive, our CranioSacral Therapy (CST) assessments are performed by our highly skilled Osteopathic Practitioners, select Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs), and physiotherapists. CST is a specialized evaluation technique that allows us to feel and treat the subtle movements of the cranial bones, brain, nervous system, and the connective tissue coverings (dura mater). Our therapists undergo extensive training to develop the specific skills needed to perform this delicate therapy, ensuring that your treatment is tailored precisely to your needs.
When you choose PhysioActive, our client care managers will connect you with the most appropriate therapist for your condition and goals. Our team works collaboratively, combining their expertise to create a personalized treatment plan that aims to get you better as quickly and effectively as possible. Whether you’re dealing with a concussion, nerve issues, or pain linked to
Our Treatment:
CranioSacral Therapy is one of the most effective ways of regulating your autonomic nervous system. When your body is in a fight-or-flight state—for example, when you are running away from a lion—your body is in no state to heal. Your therapist will use extremely gentle touch to make sure all the bones of your cranium are mobile.
The bottom end of the CranioSacral mechanism is the sacrum. The same gentle treatment techniques will be used to make sure there is full mobility of your sacrum. Once your pelvis and cranium are freed from restriction, the dural tube—the covering of your brain and nervous system—must be able to move up and down freely to allow the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, which brings nutrition to your nervous system, facilitates adequate blood flow, and removes any toxic materials from your nervous system.
CST can be used very effectively as part of a comprehensive complementary treatment. Treating the cranium is essential for the recovery of any concussion or traumatic brain injury.
Our Technology
Healing technologies can be added as a complementary tool in your healing. Red light and laser therapy have also been shown to improve cerebrospinal fluid flow, blood flow, and relaxation of the nervous system. Magnetic bio-stimulation or Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy also improves cellular metabolism and resonance.
At PhysioActive, we highly recommend supplementing your CranioSacral Therapy with some movement-based therapies. After CranioSacral Therapy, your body and mind are in a much better position to integrate new information.

What is Craniosacral Therapy?
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that focuses on the rhythm and flow of cerebrospinal fluid within the CranioSacral system. This system, which includes the membranes and fluids surrounding the brain and spinal cord, plays a crucial role in maintaining the body’s balance and overall well-being. CST uses light touch to release tension deep within the body, promoting a sense of calm, improving mobility, and supporting the body’s natural healing processes.
How Does Craniosacral Therapy Work?
During a CST session, the therapist uses their hands to evaluate the craniosacral rhythm, gently manipulating the bones of the skull, spine, and pelvis to release restrictions in the system. This subtle yet powerful technique helps to normalize the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, which can relieve pain, reduce stress, and enhance your body’s ability to heal itself. The treatment is deeply relaxing and can be beneficial for a wide range of conditions, from chronic pain to emotional stress.
What Can Craniosacral Therapy Treat?
Craniosacral Therapy is effective for a variety of physical and emotional conditions, including:
- Chronic Pain: Helps alleviate persistent pain in areas such as the neck, back, and joints.
- Migraines and Headaches: Reduces the frequency and intensity of headaches by addressing tension and restrictions in the Craniosacral system.
- Stress and Anxiety: Promotes relaxation and helps the body manage the physical effects of stress.
- Sleep Disorders: Improves sleep quality by balancing the nervous system.
- TMJ Dysfunction: Relieves jaw pain and discomfort by addressing imbalances in the cranial bones.
- Trauma Recovery: Supports healing from physical and emotional trauma by releasing deep-seated tensions.
CST as Part of Osteopathy
CranioSacral Therapy is a key component of osteopathy, a holistic approach to health that considers the entire body. When combined with osteopathic treatments, CST enhances the body’s natural healing mechanisms, providing a more comprehensive and effective treatment. Osteopathy addresses structural issues in the body, while CST focuses on the subtle, yet crucial, aspects of CranioSacral health, ensuring that the body is functioning optimally on every level.
Why CST with Physiotherapy is Better Together
While Craniosacral Therapy is powerful on its own, combining it with physiotherapy can lead to even better results. Physiotherapy focuses on restoring movement, strength, and function, while CST addresses the underlying nervous system and fluid dynamics that support these functions. Together, they create a holistic approach to healing that addresses both the physical and subtle aspects of your health. This combination helps you recover faster, manage pain more effectively, and achieve long-lasting wellness.
At PhysioActive, our skilled therapists integrate Craniosacral Therapy into your treatment plan to ensure that you receive the most comprehensive care possible. Whether you’re dealing with chronic pain, stress, or recovering from an injury, CST, combined with physiotherapy, offers a unique and effective approach to achieving your health goals.

FAQs for Craniosacral Therapy (CST)
-
What can I expect in a CST appointment? During a CST appointment, you’ll lie comfortably while the therapist uses a gentle, light touch to assess and treat the craniosacral system. The session is deeply relaxing, often bringing a sense of calm and relief. The therapist will focus on releasing any tension or restrictions in the cranial bones, spine, and surrounding tissues, promoting your body’s natural ability to heal. -
It feels like such light touch—how can that be effective? The light touch used in CST may seem subtle, but it’s incredibly powerful. The craniosacral system is sensitive and responds best to gentle manipulation. By applying just the right amount of pressure, the therapist can release deep-seated tensions and restore balance within the body, leading to significant improvements in how you feel. -
Do the bones of the cranium/skull move? Yes, the bones of the cranium have a subtle, natural movement that is crucial for maintaining the health of the craniosacral system. CST works by gently enhancing this movement, helping to relieve tension and improve the function of the nervous system. -
Does cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) move in my brain and spinal cord? Absolutely. Cerebrospinal fluid flows rhythmically around the brain and spinal cord, cushioning and protecting them. CST helps to optimize the flow of this fluid, ensuring that your nervous system functions smoothly and effectively. -
Is cranial therapy safe? Craniosacral Therapy is extremely safe. The gentle, non-invasive techniques used in CST are suitable for people of all ages, from infants to the elderly. It’s particularly beneficial for those with sensitive conditions, as it works harmoniously with the body’s natural healing processes without causing stress or strain.
