Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease

How PhysioActive can help you with Osgood’s Schlatter Disease.

At PhysioActive, we understand that Osgood’s Schlatter disease can be a debilitating condition that affects many people, especially active adolescents. Osgood’s Schlatter disease is a common knee problem that causes pain and swelling below the knee cap, where the patellar tendon attaches to the shinbone.

While Osgood’s Schlatter disease is most common in adolescents, it can also affect adults who have experienced previous knee injuries or overuse of the knee joint. The condition can be painful and affect your ability to participate in sports, exercise, or even daily activities.

Fortunately, physiotherapy can be an effective treatment for Osgood’s Schlatter disease. Our team of expert physiotherapists can provide you with a tailored treatment plan that can help alleviate your symptoms and improve your overall quality of life.

Assessment

The first step in treating Osgood’s Schlatter disease is to undergo a thorough assessment by a physiotherapist. During the assessment, the physiotherapist will evaluate the severity of the condition, the extent of any swelling or inflammation, and any underlying causes that may be contributing to the symptoms. One of the most common causes is a tight rectus femoris.

Treatment

Once the assessment is complete, your therapist will develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs. Treatment for Osgood’s Schlatter disease may include:

  1. Pain Management: Your physiotherapist will work with you to manage your pain through various techniques, such as manual therapy, ice or heat therapy, and therapeutic exercises.
  2. Stretching and Strengthening Exercises: Your physiotherapist will provide you with exercises that can help stretch and strengthen the muscles and tendons surrounding the knee joint. These exercises can help improve your knee’s mobility and prevent further injury.
  3. Education: Your physiotherapist will provide you with education on how to manage your symptoms and prevent further damage. They will also teach you proper techniques for stretching, strengthening, and other exercises.
  4. Supportive Devices: In some cases, your physiotherapist may recommend using supportive devices such as knee braces, taping, or custom orthotics to provide additional support and prevent further damage to the knee joint.
  5. Activity Modification: Your physiotherapist may recommend modifying your activity level to avoid exacerbating the condition for a limited time. This may involve temporarily reducing or avoiding high-impact activities such as running or jumping.
  6. MOST Importantly at PhysioAcive we will figure out why your patellar tendon / quad is tight. In our experience a weak lower abdomonical and loss of pelvic and spinal control is most commonly the cause for increase tension in the rectus femoris (one of your 4 quad muscles) leading to Osgood’s as the tight tendon pulls on the bone.

At PhysioActive, we believe that every patient is unique, and we work closely with you to provide personalized care that meets your specific needs. If you are experiencing symptoms of Osgood’s Schlatter disease, we encourage you to seek treatment from a qualified physiotherapist.

Physiotherapy can be an effective treatment for Osgood’s Schlatter disease, and our team of expert physiotherapists can help you manage your symptoms, improve your mobility, and get back to the activities you love.
