Facet Syndrome
Facet syndrome in the low back (also known as lumbar facet syndrome) refers to pain and discomfort caused by the facet joints in the lower back. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including degenerative changes in the joints, arthritis, injury to the low back, or repetitive stress.
Physical therapy can be an effective treatment for lumbar facet syndrome. The goals of therapy are to reduce pain, improve flexibility and strength, and prevent further injury.
Three exercises that may help alleviate lumbar facet pain are:
- Pelvic tilt – lie on your back with your knees bent, tighten your stomach muscles to tilt your pelvis.
- Hamstring stretch – sit on the floor with one leg straight out in front of you and the other bent, reach forward to touch your toes on the straight leg.
- McKenzie Extension exercises – lie on your stomach, prop yourself up on your elbows, hold for a few seconds, then relax.
