Facet syndrome
Facet syndrome in the neck (also known as cervical facet syndrome) refers to pain and discomfort caused by the facet joints in the neck. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including degenerative changes in the joints, arthritis, injury to the neck, or repetitive stress.
Physical therapy can be an effective treatment for cervical facet syndrome. The goals of therapy are to reduce pain, improve flexibility and strength, and prevent further injury.
Three exercises that may help alleviate cervical facet pain are:
- Neck retraction exercises – gently pull your head backwards while keeping your chin level with the ground.
- Shoulder blade squeeze – squeeze your shoulder blades together while keeping your arms relaxed.
- Gentle neck stretches – tilt your head to the side, hold for a few seconds, then repeat on the other side.
