CMC Thumb Arthritis

Thumb CMC (carpometacarpal) arthritis is a condition in which the joint at the base of the thumb becomes worn down and causes pain and limited motion. It can be caused by aging, repetitive use of the thumb, or injury.

Movements that can cause strain to the thumb with CMC arthritis include gripping, pinching, and twisting of the wrist. Symptoms of thumb CMC arthritis include pain, stiffness, and weakness in the thumb.

To diagnose thumb CMC arthritis, you can perform the pinch test. This involves making a fist and trying to touch the tip of your thumb to the base of your small finger. Pain or difficulty performing this motion can indicate CMC arthritis.

To avoid further strain on the joint, it’s recommended to avoid activities that put excessive stress on the thumb and to limit repetitive motions. Here are five corrective exercises to rehabilitate thumb CMC arthritis:

  1. Thumb extension exercises: Hold a light weight and extend your thumb away from your hand.
  2. Pinch and grip strengthening: Use a squeeze ball or hand gripper to strengthen the muscles in your thumb and hand.
  3. Wrist and thumb flexion exercises: Hold a light weight with your palm facing up and flex your wrist and thumb downwards.
  4. Thumb stretch: Hold your hand with your thumb facing down and gently pull your thumb away from your wrist.
  5. Massage: Gently massage the affected area to reduce pain and swelling. It’s important to seek medical attention if you suspect you have thumb CMC arthritis, as it may require medical treatment such as physical therapy, splinting, or surgery.
