Hamstring Tear or Tendonitis
Usually from overuse, poor balance, a weak core or poor gluteal muscle activation.
A hamstring tear is a common injury that occurs when one or more of the muscles at the back of the thigh (hamstrings) become strained or torn.
Symptoms of a hamstring tear may include sudden pain at the back of the thigh, swelling, bruising, weakness, and difficulty walking or standing. Depending on the severity of the tear, you may also experience a popping or snapping sensation at the time of injury.
Hamstring tears can be caused by a variety of factors, including sports that involve sudden stops or changes in direction, poor flexibility or muscle imbalances, or direct trauma to the area.
To help alleviate symptoms of a hamstring tear, your physiotherapist, chiropractor, or osteopath may recommend a combination of exercises, stretches, and manual therapy.
These may include:
- Gentle hamstring stretches: Lie on your back and gently pull your affected leg towards your chest until you feel a stretch in the hamstring muscles. Hold for 30 seconds, then release and repeat several times.
- Wall slides: Stand with your back against a wall and your feet a few inches away from the wall. Slowly slide down the wall into a squatting position, then slide back up.
- Glute bridges: Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the ground. Lift your hips up towards the ceiling while squeezing your glutes, then lower back down.
- Isometric hamstring contractions: Sit on a chair with your affected leg extended straight out in front of you. Push the back of your knee down into the chair, holding for 5-10 seconds before releasing.
- Pool therapy: Gentle swimming or water-based exercises can help to reduce pain and inflammation in the hamstring muscles while providing a low-impact workout.
In addition to these exercises, your healthcare provider may also recommend manual therapy techniques such as massage, trigger point therapy, or joint mobilization to help alleviate pain and restore normal function to the affected area.
