Pre-Screening for Injections
All injections are performed at the Canadian Centre for Integrative Medicine (12 Main St. North, Markham,ON) by Dr. Gordon Ko and Thomas Hein. A pre-screening (1 hour consultation) must be scheduled with Thomas Hein at Physioactive to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for injections. You will be fast-tracked into the injection clinic after completing the necessary pre-screening at our clinic.
A comprehensive 1 hour consultation will be required to determine not only the local reason of your symptoms, but any underlying cause contributing to your pain or dysfunction. A biomechanical assessment is performed by our staff to determine the appropriateness of injection therapy and most importantly which type of injection will be most beneficial for you. Our skilled manual practitioners are familiar with many injection methods and will determine the primary biomechanical fault(s) and which type of injection is most appropriate for your case. It is essential to know whether something is moving too much, not enough, or just out of balance. A detailed report is generated and the information is provided to Dr. Ko for consultation and discussion. The injections are usually performed with Thomas Hein and Dr. Ko present. The injections have the best results when coupled with appropriate therapy and lifestyle support. Components of Functional Medicine may be addressed as well as structural/muscular dysfunction.
Please note that in order to receive injections from Dr. Ko at the Canadian Centre for Integrative Medicine, you will need a referral from your family MD (i.e. referral for Physiatrist).
Types of Injections
Botox is very effective in reducing muscle spasm and chronic tightness as well as reducing neuropathic pain. The goal is to correct abnormal muscle tightness/spasm and reduce pain. This can be an effective method for those resistant to conventional therapy. Post injections exercises and rehabilitation will be more effective and greater improvement can be achieved.
PROLOTHERAPY ‘A natural proliferant can be injected to “tighten up” stretched out ligaments. This is a non-surgical approach to treat unstable joints of the entire body. Most frequently, the lower back and sacro-iliac joints are injected.
PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) –
This is the newest cutting edge procedure that has been used in professional sports to treat muscle, tendon and ligament injuries. Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP is blood plasma with concentrated platelets. The concentrated platelets found in PRP contain huge reservoirs of bioactive proteins, including growth factors that are vital to initiate and accelerate tissue repair and regeneration. These bioactive proteins initiate connective tissue healing, bone regeneration and repair, promote development of new blood vessels, and stimulate the wound healing process. A small portion of your blood is extracted and centrifuged to collect the platelets along with the healing proteins. This injection of healing substances from your own blood helps to heal the injured tissues and puts you on the path to full functioning and return to your pre-injury status or better. Professional athletes have used this therapy with great results with sports injuries and it has been shown to be helpful with arthritic joints, lower back pain, degenerative disc disease and more specific injuries including tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, ACL tears, shin splints, rotator cuff tears, plantar fasciitis and iliotibial band syndrome. The additional therapies and exercises offered to complement this therapy help to insure that you are fully restored and at least as functional as prior to the injury. The team approach of a skilled manual therapist and Dr. Ko will provide specific, gentle and effective injections to minimize any discomfort associated with the procedure.
